Abstract

Left-handedness has been belittled and even stigmatized by some cultures and societies throughout human history. Its biological nature has been investigated from different perspectives without providing conclusive reasons as to why a dexterous condition could have led to a higher biological efficiency for our species. In this essay we discuss arguments for and against a hypothesis focused on its possible relationship with bipedalism and the consequent increased vulnerability of the thoracic front.
