Gerald Brenan and Gamel Woolsey as translators: an analysis of their English versions of the medieval poems included in Brenan’s The Literature of the Spanish People

Es mi intención mostrar en este artículo la mediocre calidad como traductores literarios del hispanista británico Gerald Brenan (1894-1987) y de su esposa la poetisa norteamericana Gamel Woolsey (1895-1968). Analizo para ello las versiones al inglés que realizan de los pasajes y poemas medievales españoles que insertan en The Literature of the Spanish People (1951) de Brenan. Estas están repletas de errores de interpretación. Muestro asimismo los recursos que el matrimonio Brenan emplea para disimular su mediocridad como traductores, de la que parecen ser empero conscientes.
