Abstract

This article analyses the historical invisibility of women in graphic design through an integrative review of literature from an intersectional feminist perspective. The objectives are to examine the representation of women in the historiography of the discipline, to identify the cultural and labour factors that favour their exclusion, to evaluate the impact of gender bias in the current industry, and to propose strategies for greater inclusion. The methodology combines a bibliographic search in academic databases (1970-2025) with a critical hermeneutic analysis, categorising the sources around three axes: patriarchal construction of the canon, sexual division of labour, and inclusive pedagogical proposals. The results show the persistence of a masculine canonical narrative, marked occupational segregation, and a “glass ceiling” that limits women's access to leadership positions. The study concludes that a critical review of history, the systematic incorporation of a gender perspective in training, and the promotion of female role models are essential actions for transforming graphic design into a more equitable, pluralistic, and representative field.
