This research aims to analyze the current situation of the professional collegiate activity of social workers in the province of Cádiz, based on the direct experience of different professionals in both the public and private spheres. By means of 95 interviews carried out in 22 municipalities with graduates between 24 and 62 years of age, the article focuses on the existing impediments to becoming a member of a professional body, the difficulties in participating in professional activities and relations with the academic sphere. Nevertheless, various proposals are put forward that highlight the need to seek new formulas to encourage membership and to continue to defend the main objectives of the profession. The usefulness of these results is proposed as a means to critically reflect on the current role of professional bodies, as well as to know how to adapt the different initiatives and activities to the new members within their current problems where, for example, as shown in the work, it has to do with the economic factor.
