Pornography and sexism: impact on adolescents and young men

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to determine wether adolescents and young men aged 18-22 identify the sexist elements of pornography, and if these elements are incorporated into their private affective-sexual lives, perpetuating and reproducing classic and unequal gender roles and stereotypes. For this, scientific publications on pornography, its representations and the impact it can have on consumers have been examined in detail. In the same way, a quantitative analysis has been carried out, through surveys of men with the profile described previously, carried out by a total of 48 men who lived in different municipalities of Valencia. The results obtained have shown that 87,4% of those surveyed do consume pornography, and that almost 80% maintain that the heterosexual sexual relationship that is represented is based on inequality between men and women, where women play a role submissive in front of the man who has a dominant role. Likewise, 75,8% do not use pornography as a learning tool and reject the unequal relationship that is represented, however, the vast majority have desires or fantasies based on classic and unequal sexual practices.
