Transnationality and Documentary: Walking the Paths of a Fertile Route

Abstract

Although the cinematographic relations between Europe and Latin America have traditionally been intense, the socio-cultural and technological evolution of recent decades has led to the emergence of a new framework for creation, production and distribution marked by its transnational character. The identity and cultural implications of these processes, and their reflection in the aesthetics, themes and models of production and circulation of contemporary Latin American documentaries, make up a panorama of great interest to which the Festival of Malaga, Cine en Español, devoted full attention at its 5th Documentary Film Festival. Under the title “Transnationality and Documentary Filmmaking: Return Journeys between Europe and Latin America”, and with the collaboration of the Aula Maria Zambrano of Transatlantic Studies of the University of Malaga, it brought together academics, critics, programmers and filmmakers for a couple of days around one objective: to reflect on contagion and transfers in contemporary documentaries on both sides of the Atlantic. This monographic recovers some of the topics discussed at the V Meeting of Documentary Cinema in a compilation of texts, articles and interviews, signed by some of the researchers, programmers and filmmakers present at that meeting.
