Literary Journalism vs Conventional Journalism in the Coverage of the Syrian Conflict in the Periodicals The Guardian and The New Yorker

Resumen

O papel do jornalismo ganha relevância na sociedade como um veículo de influência, capaz de moldar a agenda pública, e a sua tradição assenta na adoção de práticas linguísticas como a objetividade e a simplicidade narrativa e linguística, que cumprem a missão informativa. O jornalismo literário surge como uma alternativa a esta ‘rigidez’ ao afirmar-se pela utilização de uma linguagem narrativa e complexa que partilha características com a ficção. Este artigo explora os aspetos diferenciadores do jornalismo literário e do jornalismo convencional na cobertura do conflito sírio. Foram selecionados os periódicos britânicos The Guardian e americano The New Yorker, especializados em jornalismo convencional e jornalismo literário respetivamente. O corpus de análise consiste em três artigos de cada periódico com enfoque no espaço temporal entre o aparecimento dos primeiros protestos sírios e a formação do primeiro movimento armado. São comparadas as técnicas linguísticas usadas nos dois tipos de jornalismo sendo explorados os diferentes posicionamentos dos jornalistas no processo de Newsmaking da cobertura do conflito sírio. Averígua-se igualmente o papel das personagens das histórias enquanto sujeitos narrativos nos dois géneros.
