ABSTRACT
Hegel developed his theory of the concept as a concrete universal in opposition to empiricist abstractionism, which separated the particular and the singular from their rational universality. Løgstrup also formulated his theory of the singular universal in opposition to the scientism prevalent in Western culture in the 20th century and Strawson’s metaphysics of individuals. The universal is singular, says Løgstrup, because it penetrates each singular reality with force and intensity. It is within it, unable to be separated from the singular reality, from the concrete situation. In this, he fully agrees with Hegel, but in discussing some of Strawson’s theses, Løgstrup succeeds in fully characterising his theory of the singular universal and distancing himself from other theories that assert that the place of the universal is the effective and singular real, such as Hegel’s. In contrast to Hegel’s self-determination of the concrete universal, Løgstrup proposes his theory of analogous order and the self-regulation of the singular in opposition to the self-determination of the universal.
