From the primacy of knowledge to the preeminence of the word
E. Grassi's dispute with German idealism

This study is based on an analysis of the proposal of the Italo-German philosopher Ernesto Grassi, who, in contrast to the Cartesian beginning of modern thought, reclaims an alternative origin of Modernity in the philosophy of Renaissance rhetorial humanism. Unlike the rationalist philosophy that culminates in German Idealism, this tradition does not begin with the problem of the foundation of knowledge, but rather with the problem of the word. This Grassian thesis enables us to present his critique of idealist thought as responsible for the oblivion of that humanist tradition. Following a genealogy of Grassi’s early writings, the study concludes that the thought of Giambattista Vico is fundamental to the development of his critique.
