The Ivolution encoder is a valid and reliable device to measure barbell mean velocity during the bench press on a Smith machine

Velocity-based training is an effective method for prescribing and assessing the effects of resistance training, using barbell velocity as a key performance indicator. This study aims to analyze the validity and reliability of the new Ivolution encoder in comparison with the ADR system for measuring barbell velocity during the Smith machine bench press. Fourteen resistance-trained subjects participated. After estimating their 1RM in the bench press, subjects completed two equal blocks of 6 repetitions each at 40-60-80% of their 1RM. The mean velocity of the lifting phase was recorded simultaneously with the Ivolution encoder and the ADR encoder. The results showed a nearly perfect correlation (R > 0.9) between the ADR and Ivolution encoders at all intensities, with a low systematic bias (<0.05 m/s) according to Bland-Altman plots. In addition, the Ivolution encoder demonstrated high reliability, with an intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) above 0.8 at all intensities, being higher at lower intensities. In conclusion, the Ivolution encoder is a valid and reliable device for measuring barbell mean velocity during the Smith bench press exercise.
