Pagans’ Magical Practices in the Late-Ancient Church

In the late Roman world, we can attest to various forms of magic-working. The traditional experts continue to practise magic under a Christian empire as before but new forms of magician do appear because there is still a reality to what magic seems to accomplish. The churchmen did not deny the efficacy of enchanters’ abilities. In fact, the church leaders were, actively trying to construct an area of Christian practice and some Christians saw no harm in admitting to a likeness between holy wonderworkers and magicians. All of them were in agreement about one general goal: they wanted to bolster their local authority. The use -and reinterpretation of regional practice was one of the ecclesiastical strategies to
articulate a new ritual discourse.
