Abstract

A mantic spell from PGM III is the dwelling place of two magic hymns. The aim of this paper is to offer a new critical edition of the hymns with translation, in the context of what seems to be a very specific kind of magic, photagogy, a transcendence tool of Neoplatonic influence. Our main interest is the effect in the performer of the ritual, therefore the analysis is based on the developments of the CCR and focused on the reasons for the use of typical Greek hymnic songs in magic.
