Abstract

This paper addresses the effect that Nietzsche’s interpretation of stoicism, basically Epictetus’, has on his conception of the individual who must overcome nihilism. Stoic thinking allows Nietzsche to explore an ideal of self-sufficiency that focuses on the formation of subjectivity in the self and which he gives new meaning in hermeneutic terms. In this context, he proposes a particular understanding of the ‘state of chronic vulnerability’, to which the self is exposed and which is integrated into the diagnosis of the present.
