Abstract

Without denying his originality and his differences from other authors, Nietzsche’s thought was taken from German romantic sources. That is the case of Johann Gottfried Herder, who belongs to an intellectual tradition dating back to the eighteenth-century and which has as an essential reference Prussia’s social, cultural and political environment. This article addresses the question of language in the theses proposed by
Herder in his seminal work Essay on the Origin of Language. We try to establish the approaches that flourish in the relationship Herder-Nietzsche. Starting from Herder, we intend to explore the possibilities opened by Herder and later taken into account by the German philologist.
