Abstract

Schizophrenia is one of the severe mental disorders affecting 1 in 300 people worldwide. It significantly affects cognitive states, which in turn impacts autonomy in performing activities of daily living. Sheltered flats emerge as supervised spaces that promote a balance between support and self-management for these people. This study explores how cognitive status influences autonomy in activities of daily living and assesses the impact of sheltered accommodation on autonomy in performing activities of daily living. We worked with 57 users of the ALUME Saúde Mental centre in Lugo, with an average age of 51.23 years and 28% residing in sheltered accommodation. A statistically significant moderate correlation was found between cognitive status scores and activities of daily living, i.e. the higher the cognitive capacity, the better the performance in activities of daily living and vice versa. No significant differences in cognitive status were observed between residents of sheltered housing and other settings. However, a two-sample test showed significant differences in autonomy in activities of daily living, being better in those living in sheltered accommodation.
