Abstract

Molecular biology in Spain is orphaned, but with an extraordinary legacy. Last Thursday, November 7, 2019, Margarita Salas, our most international scientist, died in Madrid at the age of 80. She had been hospitalized for several weeks extremely weak until her heart stopped. Her death caught us all off guard. She used to say that she wanted to die with her lab coat on following the example of another great fighter, the neurologist and Nobel laureate Rita Levi-Montalcini who remained scientifically active at 103 years of age. And indeed, she continued to go to her laboratory at the «Severo Ochoa» Molecular Biology Center in Madrid where she worked as an Ad Honorem professor at the CSIC. Margarita Salas dedicated 60 years of her life to research.
