Abstract

The Mediterranean diet correlates  with a lower risk of suffering from  cardiovascular disease, cancer,  type 2 diabetes, Alzheimer, among others. These positive effects in health account for a synergy of bioactive agents, vitamins and unsaturated fatty acids, present in different foods in the diet. Most of these compounds have antioxidant action and are implicated in routes of inflammation and cell proliferation, from which its role in disease prevention is deduced. However, the benefits associated with the Mediterranean diet are not only due to the dietary pattern, but also to other healthy practices typical of the Mediterranean region, such  as physical exercise.
