Abstract

Stem cells, or more correctly, progenitor cells (a stricter term, translated from the English ‘stem cell’), distinguish themselves from any other type of cell in the following characteristics: firstly, they have the ability to divide to originate new stem cells (what is known as self-renewal), thus constituting a source of these same cells; secondly, they have the potential to differentiate, under certain conditions, into different cellular lineages (what is known as plasticity), such as: neuronal cells, hepatic cells, epithelial cells, muscular cells, bone cells, etc
