Abstract

This piece of work examines the opening ofthe first road routes in the province of Málaga in the eighteenth century and that of their subsequent development throughout the nineteenth century.
With tite design oj these new roads from Málaga city centre to Antequera and Vélez-Málaga, it was endeavoured, for the first of these routes, lo build a road in order to transport mercantile produce to the inland of the country. A further advantage was hence access to the capital city. The importance of a road that was linked to Vélez, was focused on the need to bring about a quick and safer transport of agricultura produce, especially that of wine and raisins, to Málaga harbour.
