Abstract

In the picture of Saint Pelagius facing Abdderraman III of Corduba, several legends of classical Antiquity are represented: Leda and the swan, the suicide of Lucretia and a third one which the author of this paper identifies with the myth about Crimisus and Egesta. This legends, together with the names of Pasiphae and Minerva written on the picture, seem to be moral allegories obviously related to the main theme of the picture and the reredos to which this one belongs: they portray chastity and reason opposed to the irrationality of lust.
