Interiors and Hannah and her Sisters: artists and creators in the Films of Woody allen

Abstract

Reflections about art and those in which the artists are both creators and protagonists are essential in the work of the lmmaker Woody Allen. Through the study of two of his movies – Interiors and Hannah and her sisters – we analyze the di erent stances of the charac- ters when they tackle their artistic urges, and how their attitude a ects their social behavior. In the rst movie, almost all the characters show in their life the frustrations they face when creating, whether related to writing, photography, decoration or acting. In the second movie, two characters – a painter and a TV screenwriter – o er even more insights on the bitter value that Allen associates with the artistic work: a series of impulses that only bring dissatisfaction on his characters, and question the role of art from the creator’s point of view.
